Car sales allowed during lockdown level 4!

The government published new regulations on 12 May with regards to car sales. According to the Government Gazette (see below), a “car” refers to any vehicle designed or adapted for propulsion or haulage on a road by means of fuel, gas or electricity or any other means. This includes Passenger Cars (PCs), Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV), Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCV), Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV), Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicles (XHCV), inclusive of buses, motorcycles, trailers, caravans, agricultural or any other implement designed or adapted to be drawn by such car.

Car sales will be handled in a phased approach. Phase one will allow dealerships to operate at 30% capacity, phase two at 60% capacity, and phase three at 100% capacity.

NAAMSA reported that a total of 22 200 passenger vehicles and 9 425 light commercial vehicles were sold during March 2020. Even though the year-to-date totals for 2020 is lower than the year-to-date totals for 2019, it still shows that the automotive market is crucial to the survival of the economy.

According to NAAMSA, the majority of vehicles sold during March 2020 belonged to the following brands:

  • Volkswagen
  • Toyota
  • Hyundai
  • Renault
  • Ford
  • Suzuki
  • Mercedes-Benz/Smart

In April, there was a total of 105 passenger vehicles sold that belonged to the following brands:

  • Ford
  • Toyota
  • Suzuki
  • Haval
  • Datsun
  • Nissan
  • Volvo
  • Jaguar

Based on statistics from the Junk Mail website, we’ve seen a somewhat similar interest in vehicles, with some of the most searched vehicles during the last month being the VW Golf range, the VW Polo range, the VW Jetta, the Toyota Corolla, and older models such as the Ford Escort, the Ford Cortina, the Ford Granada, the Toyota Conquest, Toyota Tazz, Corsa Utility and Nissan 1400.

Then we also saw quite an increase in searches for the Toyota Land Cruiser, the Mazda RX7 and then a wide variety of BMW models such as the E30, E36, 1 Series, 3 Series and more.

The increase in demand for more affordable vehicles shows that consumers are planning on downgrading their vehicles in order to save money, both on payments and possibly fuel consumption.

Junk Mail has also seen a 29.45% increase in leads during the last 2 weeks, which clearly shows that consumers are ready to purchase and that the opening of vehicle sales in level 4 will definitely have a positive impact on the South African economy.

Since competition in the car sales industry will be tight, we would like to remind dealers that online marketing is now more important than ever. Making sure that people know about your dealership and its offerings/promotions is crucial, and Junk Mail is geared to help dealerships across South Africa with FREE advertising!

It is with a heavy heart that we inform you, our loyal
clients, that Trade Mark Tattoo will be closed for 2 weeks from Sunday 22nd
March.

Given the recently gazetted government regulations to curb
the spread of Covid-19, we feel that it is our responsibility to play our part
in trying to flatten the curve.

Appointments that have already been booked between 22nd
March and 5th April will be kept, but we will not be taking any new bookings
for this period.

If you have a booking and would rather reschedule, please
drop us an email and we will be happy to accommodate you (we will still be
available via email for new bookings and queries during this time).

To our customers with appointments booked over the next 2
weeks, we ask that you do not bring anyone with you to your appointments. They
will be asked to leave – ZERO exceptions.

We don’t do this out of disrespect but our shop is small so
in an effort to limit interpersonal contact, we ask for your understanding,
respect and co-operation in this regard.

We have always strived to provide the most hygienic and
sanitary environment possible. We will continue to do so with beefed up
sanitization practices that we ask our customers to adhere to too while we
navigate this turbulent time.

The safety of our clients and staff is of utmost importance
to us.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

We look forward to seeing you all again soon.
