If you think about it, it is obvious. Our tires wear out, and that has to go somewhere, but what surprises us is how fast it happens. Single-use plastic is the most significant source of oceanic pollution, but tire microplastics are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunomia.co.uk\/reports-tools\/investigating-options-for-reducing-releases-in-the-aquatic-environment-of-microplastics-emitted-by-products\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">next on the naughty list<\/a>. Road dust should pass through instead of gumming up the system since it is not charged. In an odd twist, hybrid vehicles are more dangerous regarding this type of pollution than their 100% petrol counterparts since they have to support a battery and electric motor.<\/p>\n<p>When the tire dust is collected, it isn&#8217;t dumped out, because it can be reused as a <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2020\/04\/20\/measuring-sharpie-thickness-the-ink-itself-not-the-pen\/\">pigment<\/a> or even refined back into <a href=\"https:\/\/hackaday.com\/2019\/08\/02\/hackaday-podcast-029-your-face-in-silver-sand-tires-of-the-future-esp32-all-the-cnc-things-and-sub-in-a-jug\/\">new tires<\/a>. They&#8217;re collecting 60% of thrown particles in a lab setting, and they&#8217;re improving.
